Like the claw of the Harpy eagle the C08 is shaped for controlled pulling cuts. The hawkbill blade shape originated in the marine/fishing industry where severing rope, line, webbing and netting is done at arm's length quickly and efficiently. The curving arc holds what you're cutting against the sharpened edge keeping it from slipping off the tip. Custom knifemaker David Boye developed the dent in the locking lever, which insures the blade remains securely locked open when gripping the handle with force. Cut out of the handle is a drying vent allowing air to circulate around the blade when closed wet. Metal clip is positioned for tip down carry.length overall 6 1/2" (165 mm) blade length 2 3/4" (70 mm) blade steel VG-10 length closed 3 7/8" (99 mm) cutting edge 1 9/16" (65 mm) weight 3.75 oz (106 g) hole diamter 15/32" (12 mm) blade thickness 1/8" (3 mm) handle material Stainless Steel

Specialty blade for specific work September 2, 2008

Like all Spyderco knives, the Harpy is fantastically sharp, tearing through even wood w/ ease. Its construction is durable, very reductionist. I like its comfortable feel.
Difficult to sharpen, due to the serrations and unique blade profile. But it has excellent edge retention, so that's not much of a concern. Due to the hawk bill blade it's not the best for penetrating, but it does have a sharp point.
Not what I'd call an everyday carry, but it's ideal for cutting ropes or cardboard or other fibrous material. If that's what you need it for, there's none better.
